Raymond Kenneth "Kenny" Matthews, Jr., age 94, of Wellston, passed away surrounded by family Friday, February 16, 2018 at Jenkins Care Community Assisted Living in Wellston. He was born at home in Wellston on May 31, 1923 to the late Raymond K. Matthews, Sr. and Luella Ruth Dempsey Matthews. Kenny was a 1941 graduate of Wellston High School. He went on to further his education at The Ohio State University, where he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. A veteran of WWII, Kenny served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the 281st Engineer Combat Battalion with the United States Army. He retired as Vice President of Engineering from the former McNally-Pittsburg Manufacturing in Wellston after 35 years' service there. In his younger years, Kenny loved to hunt game and enjoyed woodworking. In his later years, his interests turned to playing bingo and visiting with his family and friends. Kenny was a lifelong member of the Hope United Methodist Church in Wellston, a 66 year member of Black Diamond Lodge #538 F&AM, a member of Shiloh Shrine Club, and a former member of the American Legion. He is survived by his children, Charles Matthews (Rhonda) of Columbus, John Matthews of Plainfield, Illinois, Marilyn Matthews of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Steve Matthews (Brenda) of Albany; grandchildren, Ben Matthews (Lana), Katie Phillips (Jason), Bekah Matthews, and Britney Doudna (Andy), as well as 3 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Kenny was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet K. Maerker Matthews in 1990; and sisters, Eleanor Matthews and Virginia Fleischman. In keeping with Kenny's wishes, his body was cremated. Private graveside services will be held at the Ridgewood Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in Kenny's memory be made to Black Diamond Lodge #538 F&AM, P.O. Box 215, Wellston, Ohio 45692.
